LIKE GHOSTS IN THE HALLWAY

Description: JaDon has to keep secrets. So do his sisters. Their father, J.R. has calloused fists that makes sure their mouths keep shut. But a hospital stay loosens tongues and now even their hiding place in the hallway won’t keep them safe. J.R. can’t risk JaDon telling more. Will the kindness of others be enough to protect them? How far will J.R. go to hunt them down?

Some of the students I’ve taught and the teens that I’ve mentored have told me chilling accounts of their family drama. I often came home with a heavy heart, burdened for kids who had huge obstacles to overcome just to survive. This story is fiction, but the message of hope is real.

THANKS TO WAPITI

Description: It’s a hiding place really. Somewhere to gather your thoughts, to reflect, to breathe. Lakin finds the hidden spring nestled in the Colorado Rockies while she investigates the sighting of a mythical beast. Cole, a loner questioning God’s plan for his life, resents Lakin’s invasion of his secluded place and plots to frighten her away. He prefers the company of the orphaned elk he helped raise. Betrayal thwarts Lakin and Cole’s growing relationship. Disaster strikes, and their fate rests on the shoulders of the elk, Wapiti.

I grew up in Estes Park, right next to the Rocky Mountain National Park. We often saw herds of deer or elk on the long drive to school. Sometimes the roads in the mountains were treacherous. On one bus ride to school, I saw my mom’s car on the side of the road. I worried about her until she could finally let me know she was fine. One of my close friends was not as fortunate. Her mom’s car went down the side of the mountain and she was killed. I fused both memories together in this story.

TORNADIC

Description: Brayden’s world spins out of control after a tornado pummels his town. As stores lock down and shelter options dwindle, his family attempts to outrace the twister. They fail. Brayden’s physical and emotional scars from the ordeal soon force bouts of dizziness. He wonders if he’s completely losing his mind. Could mini-cyclones really be churning out of him? Can they be controlled? Tornadic explores a teenager’s struggle with survivor guilt, brain trauma, and finding his place in the social order.

This story stemmed from a shopping trip in suburban Kansas City with my daughters. The tornado sirens went off while we were in a store. When they stopped, we left the store thinking all was well, only to have the sirens start up again as we walked down the sidewalk. We raced back and discovered every store was locked and all the employees were in the back, unable to hear our knocking. We had a harrowing drive in search of shelter.
